Regina Taylor, a well known American actress and playwright, joined a newly integrated school in Muskogee, Oklahoma. She graduated in 1977 from LG Pinkston High School. She later joined Southern Methodist University.
She made her acting debut with roles on made for TV movies such as ‘Nurses’ in 1980 and ‘Crisis at Central High’ in 1981. John O’Connor appraised her for her performance as Minnijean Brown. But the role which made her popular and helped her to get widespread attention was of Mrs. Carter on 1989 movie ‘Lean on Me’. She was a drug addicted mother of a young female student. In the 1990s TV show ‘I’ll Fly Away’, she portrayed Lilly Harper and the role set her on the top of the success. Regina Taylor won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Drama and also an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series.
Regina Taylor also appeared as a supporting character in movies such as ‘Clockers’, ‘Courage Under Fire’, ‘A Family Thing’, ‘The Negotiator’ and in tele-films ‘Losing Isaiah’ and ‘Strange Justice’ etc.
Regina Taylor is a well known name in the theater world as well. She’s the first black woman to play Juliet in ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Her other Broadway appearances include ‘Macbeth’ and ‘As You Like It’. Her off Broadway appearances include ‘Jar The Floor’, ‘Machinal’, ‘The Illusion’, ‘A Map of the World’ and ‘The Tempest’ etc.
Regina Taylor is a fertile playwright and a Distinguished Artistic Associate of Chicago’s Goodman Theatre. Her theatre accomplishments include an appearance in the play ‘Millennium Mambo’; she has written ‘A Night in Tunisia’, the play which was premiered in the 2000 Alabama Shakespeare festival; she won the best new play award from the American Critics’ Association; she has written and directed ‘Crowns’; she next write and directed an adaptation of ‘The Seagull’ named ‘Drowning Crow’; she has also written and directed ‘The Dreams of Sarah Breedlove’ which was premiered at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival; ‘Escape From paradise, a one woman show; ‘Watermelon Rinds’, ‘Inside the Belly of the Beast’, ‘Mudtracks’, and ‘Love Poem #97’.
Currently, she’s working on the play ‘Magnolia’ as the writer in residence at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia.
